6009 Special Stamp for a Happy Nation that Nurtures Kids

Among the many different sources of delight that exist in the world, Pestalozzi talked about the joy of parents looking at their children. Merely gazing at children who are as wholesome and pure as angels purifies our hearts and enables us to know happiness of life, just like magic. Giving birth and raising a baby are true blessings from God and our given mission to fulfill. But at some point, the idea of giving birth and raising has taken a connotation in our society. Particularly in advanced countries, the issue of child rearing pitted against the growing freedom and desire of women to fulfill a career and the soaring expenses, including education expenses, has engendered a reluctance to have children. Meanwhile, in developing countries with relatively high birthrates, many kids are not properly nurtured, often denied such basic rights as education, hygiene, and even food. This issue of whether to give birth and raise children has become increasingly polarized, requiring the keen interest and strong support at the government level. Giving birth and raising a baby well are not roles only to be shouldered by individuals and families. The joyous mission of rearing children needs to be embraced by all nations and international societies.
Dreaming of a world where people can relish the happiness of raising a child without worries, works selected as the recipients of the Grand Prize as well as the Award of Excellence in the 2008 international postage stamp design contest are issued as new stamps. Isaiah Otieno Nondoh (Kenya) expresses an image of a mother smiling brightly with her baby in her arms. The picture drawn by Jazayeri Shirin (Iran) depicts babies juxtaposed over happy faces in contrast to frowning faces that have no babies in their midst.

6008 Protecting Children's Human Rights Special8

More than 200 million children are being forced onto battlefields as child soldiers, while other children are being abused as cheap laborers at chemical plants, farms, mines, stone pits, etc. More than 6 million kids suffer from malnutrition every year. In addition, 275 million children are subject to domestic violence every year. Left to indifference, many adopted or disabled children suffer from society¡?s bias and inhospitality.
The ¡°UN Convention on the Right of the Child,¡± has clearly declared that every single child has the right to grow up in a healthy environment with love, educational opportunities and freedom to play to their heart¡?s content. In exercising these rights, the children should not be subjected to any type of discrimination no matter what their race, skin color, gender, language, religion, family¡?s social or financial standing. Children are the blossom who will bloom to create a better future. It is their natural right to be raised under special care based on happiness, love and understanding. Creating this kind of world is definitely our own responsibility and mission.
Dreaming of the world where all children can live a happy life, a special stamp on protection of children¡?s human rights is issued, featuring the two award-winning works of the 2007 International Postage Stamp Design Contest: ¡°Love for Eternity¡± by Roh Hye-rim (Korea) and ¡°Father¡?s Hands¡± by Robert Brun (Slovakia).

6004 Taipei 2008-21st Asian International Stamp Exhibition(Taiwan)

The TAIPEI 2008 - 21st Asian International Stamp Exhibition will be held on March 7 - 11, 2008 at the Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 3. To commemorate this philatelic gala, this Post is issuing a set of four stamps and a souvenir sheet featuring four ancient bird paintings from the National Palace Museum collection: Plum Blossoms and Solitary Bird by Pien Wen-chin, Ming Dynasty; Apricot Blossoms and Peacocks by Lü Chi, Ming Dynasty; Wild Duck by a Brook by Ch’en Lin, Yüan Dynasty; and Bamboo and Shrike by Li An-chung, Sung Dynasty. With the aim of providing an innovative design that makes the issue highly collectible, a teardrop-shaped perforation has been punched at the center of the left and right sides of each stamp on the souvenir sheet. The stamp designs follow:1. Plum Blossoms and Solitary Bird by Pien Wen-chin, Ming Dynasty (NT$5.00): A great scholar and poet, he was also a master of the flower-and-bird genre of painting. This painting depicts a yellow-browed bunting perched on a plum branch, craning its neck as it looks around. The rendering of the bird’s fluffy plumage and the tree’s gnarled branches accurately conveys not only the appearance but also the spirit of the subject matter.2. Apricot Blossoms and Peacocks by Lü Chi, Ming Dynasty (NT$9.00): The white apricot blossoms and the red peonies complement each other, imparting a cheerful spring atmosphere. Lü employed the circled petal technique for the apricot blossoms, and the plumage of the peacocks shows meticulous rendering. 3. Wild Duck by a Brook by Ch’en Lin, Yüan Dynasty (NT$13.00): The painting depicts a wild duck under a hibiscus bush at the water’s edge. The brushwork for the duck is finely executed without appearing overly meticulous. The brushstrokes for the water ripples and the hibiscus bush demonstrate great vitality and less attention to detail. The painting is a celebration of the joys of nature. 4. Bamboo and Shrike by Li An-chung, Sung Dynasty (NT$15.00): Li An-chung was a noted master of painting flowers, birds and animals. He was particularly noted for his goule (contour drawing) technique. The painting shows a shrike perched on a thorny branch. The bird’s hooked beak clearly shows that it is a carnivore. The bamboo leaves under the bird were painted using the double outline technique, for which thin contour lines are drawn first and then filled in with color. The execution of the brushwork is refined and the choice of colors graceful.
